The first jazz concert in Kodak Hall will be an unforgettable celebration of the life and music of Gerry Niewood Rochester native, Eastman alumnus, and the original lead alto sax of the Eastman Jazz Ensemble under its first director, Chuck Mangione. Niewood went on to tour with Mangiones bands, among many others, and became one of New Yorks most prominent studio artists. At the time of his death in February 2009, he was on his way to perform with Mangiones band in Buffalo.
Jazz greats and Eastman alumni Chuck Mangione and Lew Soloff will join saxophonist Pat LaBarbera and Eastmans jazz bands to honor the musical legacy of their friend and colleague. Also performing will be Gerrys son Adam, a rising star of the New York Jazz scene. New arrangements of some of Gerrys last and unpublished composition will highlight the evenings program.
