Important Notice!

The festival's 19th edition, originally scheduled for June 19-27, has been rescheduled due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Rather than giving up during this time of uncertainty, we are continuing to take a hopeful course and are forging ahead to the best of our ability to reschedule our 19th edition festival for October 2 to 10, 2020. These plans are fully predicated on being able to gather safely according to recommendations of our health and government officials. Read full update

Textet

The Textet was founded in 2016 by drummer/composer Grisha Alexievand vibraphonist/composer Diana Herold.Grisham Dianain Houston back in the 80s. They moved to New York (with a few stops on the way), arriving there in 1992. Over time they began to miss their Houston buddies, trumpeter Dennis Dotson and saxophonist Warren Sneed. Grishahad also played music in Dallas with pianist Stefan Karlsson, and he remembered those days. In New York, saxophonist Dave Riekenberghad made his own way from Houston. Grisha and Diana found themselves on many gigs with him, and his friendly Texas accent made them homesick and gave them an idea. Why not have a band composed of people who've done time in Texas (voluntarily and otherwise)? Plans were laid, and the group had a kickoff tour (with a recording session: “Tenors From Houston”)in the spring of 2016. We had so much fun that we toured again the following year. In 2018 we recorded a live double CD: “Son Of East Texas.”The group has a front line consisting of the legendary Dennis Dotson(Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Joe Lovano, Billy Drewes, Joe Henderson, Fathead Newman), and two tenors; Warren Sneed(a local Houston legend who also teaches at the High School For The Performing And Visual Arts), and Dave Riekenberg, whose credits are too many to mention here. Diana Herold(Ray Brown, Dale Wilson, Buddy DeFranco, Victor Lewis, They Might Be Giants—and Duke Ellington—while in junior high school!)and Stefan Karlsson(Jimmy Cobb and Eddie Gomez) provide the chords and the sparkle. Bassist Lynn Seaton(Monty Alexander and many others)plays the bass and Grisha? Well, Grisha'splayed with everyone from John Cage to Archie Bell (& the Drells), with stops in between like Wynton Marsalis, Randy Brecker, Chico O'Farrill and Herb Hall—just to throw you a curve at the end. We play our share of “Texas” jazz—Rhythm Changes and the Blues. But we play it our way, and we throw in some other stuff. Most of all, we play it our way, and we look forward to playing for you.
